  • Diesel engine in a Spyker??

I guess you guys have heard about the new V12 TDI wich will be delivered in the Audi R8 and Q7. How about mounting this engine in the D12 P2P? I think it would be a great idea. The engine delivers 500 hp and 1000 Nm of torque and it has been aproved for the emisionstandard of 2012. Welcome in Torque heaven

Maybe it's because I am selling Diesel everyday, but I like the new diesel engines a lot. I drive a 1300 kg car with 350 Nm of Torque which is fantastic! So 1000 Nm in the D12 P2P must be heaven.

    Or don't you guys agree?

The Audi R8 is quicker with this engine than with the 4.2 V8 petrol, so people at audi are not crazy. I waited a long time till a manufaturer dared to mount a diesel in a true sportscar, so I am happy now

For the SSUV, the Diesel factor would be huge. I have said it many times before... I will order one if they put a Diesel engine in it. I would prefer that over a 800 HP gas motor any time, and day. I highly doubt Audi would sell Spyker this motor but you never know. Hell, while they are at it, put an Allison tranny in it. My 2500 HD has the chevy 6.6 and ally in it and I love it to death. I would happily take that in this SSUV! thanks for posting that engine. I love that stuff.

can someone tell me the conversion formula to HP or Torque from these European figures? I never could figure that one out.

No thank you, I just got rid of my Alfa 156 with a modern JTD. Great car, great looks, great handling, great heritage but I really really really really really really really really really really hated the lack of any power below 2,000 rpm and the fact it is no fun at high revs either. You can't beat the mid range punch of the modern diesel though.

                  I found out that 1000 Nm = 723 lb-ft of Torque
                  and 1 Kw = 1,36 HP

HP (PS = German / PK = Dutch / CV = Italian, Spanish and Portuguese / cv = French) was adopted by Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN).

                    1 HP = 0.73549875 kW (i.e. 1 kW = 1.36 HP)

So 500 HP (PS) in the article = 368 kW.

And this is where the confusion comes in:
1 HP is not equal to 1 HP

We've got two standards that are very close to each other: 1 HP (DIN) = 0,986320165299762 HP (SAE)

                    So 500 HP (DIN) = 368 kW (DIN) = 493 HP (SAE)

Adding the B to HP means we are talking Brake Horse Power, indicating it is measured at the Fly wheel.

Rijk probably knows the torque conversion formula for you

Sorry; but diesels may through out wads of torque but a well designed petrol engine is sooooo much better (in a fun sense) - and without that horrible clattering

Kevin, you need to hear how the new engines sound. You are thinking of the old style smelly, loud, emmission-unfriendly ones. These new engines are rock solid. Just heavy =)

And some dude at Discovery channel translates Brake Horse Power into Rem Paardenkracht in the subtitles. Every time I see this, I go AMATEURS!

By the way, Rem Paardenkracht is LITERALLY translated from Brake Horse Power, so it doesn't make ANY sense

Dan, you're so absolutely right. I'm driving my third Alfa JTD (Unijet Diesel/Common Rail Diesel) of which two are Unijets (both Alfa 147's) and my current one is a MultiJet diesel in my 159 Sportwagon. I simply LOVE modern diesels.

This, OFCOURSE, excludes the VW TDI products (except the last 2.0 TDI which is FINALLY a common rail diesel): they are REAL tractor engines which have NO power under 2000 RPM and at 2000 RPM ALL power kicks in. The new 2.0 TDI engine is a huge improvement compared to the old Pumpduse technology. The JTD(m) engines always had a better lineair power and torque curve compared to the VW Tractor Diesel Injection engines .

However as Hans said earlier: I drove his 166 V6 a couple of weeks ago and I have to agree that with a diesel I always come short of about 1 or 2 thousand rpm's
