  • Peking to Paris - Contal 3-wheeler

... another spectacular story during the Peking to Paris 1907 is related to Auguste Pons, and his mechanic Octave Foucault. They used a Contal 3-wheeler! The weight distribution front/back was wrong and they had problems with traction on the single rear wheel. After a few hundred miles, they couldn't follow the others anymore...

"Pons and Foucault were eventually left behind – by mistake or deliberately, no one has ever been clear – in the Gobi Desert. They broke down and ran out of fuel. The fact they survived was entirely due to their endurance when, almost dead from thirst and heat, they managed to crawl after several days to the tents of nomads." (source)

    ... luckily, they survived!
