Only just noticed this thread. I am a map lover, but beware the danger of the projection!! Many of the ones that illustrate disproportionate populations etc are based upon a disproportionate map!! Most of the maps we use were developed in europe by people with a tendency to exaggerate the size and importance of places like, er... the UK and Netherlands! If you were to use a projection that properly scales countries the effect would be less. Except for Canada which really is huge and really is mostly empty.
Also beware statistics. The London Olympics showed a high correlation between medals won and sheep population.
