        First Qualifying report

Wed 11 Jun 2008 24h Du Mans: Qualifying Session 1

After last weeks weather drama the majority of time in the first session was spent on installation laps and setup of both cars. Alexei Vasiliev started in the #85 car before switching places with Ralf Kelleners after 40 minutes. The weather conditions in Le Mans are windy, dry and with 25 degrees at the begin of the session it was still warm. The crew closely monitored engine temperatures as well as the cockpit temperature which is set to a maximum of 32 degrees centigrade.

Ralf soon returned to the box and asked for a few setup changes to reduce the oversteer a bit and went out again. With 30 minutes to go Peter got in the car for his share of track time. Towards the end of the first two-hour session he went for two flying laps and set the 8th time in GT2 (4:06.268).

In the other car it was Andrea Chiesa who kicked off. He spent a little over an hour in the car and returned a number of times to the box to make changes to the car to improve the setup. At a quarter past eight he handed the car to Swiss Benjamin Leuenberger. Benjamin continued working on the setup for 30 minutes before Iradj Alexander drove the last 15 minutes to the checkered flag.

The next session is scheduled from 22:00 to 24:00.

            2nd Qualifying report

Thu 12 Jun 2008 24h Du Mans: Qualifying Session 2

Besides completing the mandatory three night laps for each driver, the Dutch team continued to work on the setup of their cars for the race in the second two-hour session today. Although the #85 car with Peter Dumbreck behind the wheel did improve times their plans for a quick lap towards the end of the second session were abandoned due to a second code red.

Peter started the second session just after 22:00 and although the right head light was a bit off Peter Dumbreck improved his time to a 4:05.096. In another attempt he hit traffic and before he could retry a code red prevented him to stay out. After about 30 minutes the session continued and Ralf got out for his mandatory laps. Alexei followed and returned to the pit box to get some fuel out of the car before Peter would go for another attempt. Unfortunately, just after they released the excessive fuel, a second code red was given after a serious shunt of an LMP2 car and with about ten minutes to go the ACO decided to stop the session.

The drivers in the #94 car continued working on the setup. Iradj Alexander started the session in the Swiss car. After 30 minutes he handed the car to Andrea Chiesa. Benjamin was the last to drive the #94 and complete his laps before the LMP2 code red.

                3rd Qualifying report

Thu 12 Jun 2008 24h Du Mans: Qualifying Session 3

Both crews continued to work on a further refinement of the setup in a session dominated by accidents. The first qualifying session this evening, the third out of a total of four sessions, started at 19:00 in dry conditions. Just before the start a few showers caused the track to be wet but with the sun replacing the cloud and medium winds all cars went out on slicks.

In the #94 Speedy Racing car Iradj Alexander started the session while Alexei Vasiliev went out in the #85. After only six minutes a LMP1 went into the barriers and caused the first code red. It took the marshals about 25 minutes to clear the track and repair the guide rails before the cars went out again at 19:30. Iradj drove for about an hour before handing the car to Andrea Chiesa. The team made further modification to the car to solve an oversteer problem before Benjamin took over from fellow countryman Chiesa.

In the meanwhile Alexei Vasiliev switched with Ralf Kelleners after the first code red was lifted. Ralf work with the mechanics the last bits of setup work and after the session he said he was happy with the setup and feeling of the car. Just before 20:30 both cars returned to the pit. Benjamin Leuenberger took place In the #94 Speed Racing and went out while Ralf was already underway for a flying lap.

Just after 20:30 a second code red was given for another shunt of an LMP1. At 20:48 the organization decided that the session was finished as the marshals were still cleaning the track.

The next and last two-hour qualifying session is scheduled at 21:45. Conditions are excellent to improve times and no rain is expected.

                    Final Qualifying report

Fri 13 Jun 2008 24h Du Mans: Qualifying report

Le Mans, 12 June – After yesterday’s action packed qualifying sessions, the teams got another chance today to further improve their race setup and qualifying times today. Like yesterday two two-hour session were scheduled and today’s goal was to finalise a satisfactionary setup for this weekend’s race.

The number 85 Spyker C8 Laviolette GT2R, driven by Peter Dumbreck, Ralf Kelleners and Alexei Vasiliev, will start the race this Saturday from a 9th position in class. The number 94 car with Andrea Chiesa, Benjamin Leuenberger and Iradj Alexander behind the wheel will start from a 12th place.

After last weeks weather drama the majority of time was spent yesterday on installation laps and a basic setup. Alexei started in the #85 car before switching seats with Ralf Kelleners. At the begin of the first session the air temperature was still high and the crew paid extra attention to the engine and cockpit temperatures. Regulations demand the cockpit temperatures to be lower than 32 degrees centigrade and violations will be penalised. With 30 minutes to go Peter got in the car for his share of track time. Towards the end of the first two-hour session he went for two flying laps and set the 8th time in GT2.

In the other car it was Andrea Chiesa who kicked off the first session. He spent little over an hour in the car and returned a number of times to the box for changes to improve the behaviour of the car. At a quarter past eight he handed the car over to Swiss Benjamin Leuenberger. Iradj Alexander completed the last 15 minutes to the checkered flag.

In Wednesday’s second session the goal was to complete the mandatory night laps - three for each driver. Peter Dumbreck did improve his time in the 85 car although their plans for another quick lap towards the end of the second session were abandoned due to another code red.

At 19:00 today green light was given for the third two-hour session. Just before the start of the session a few showers hit the track, but with the sun replacing the clouds all cars went out on slicks. After only six minutes an LMP1 went into the barriers and caused another red flag situation. It took the marshals about 25 minutes to clear the track and repair the guard rails before the cars went out again at 19:30. Session-starter Alexei Vasiliev switched with Ralf Kelleners after the code red was lifted. Ralf worked with the mechanics on the last bits of setup-work and after the session he said he was happy with the setup and handling of the car. Just after 20:30 another code red was given for shunt of an prototype and at 20:48 the organisation announced that the session was finished as the marshals required all time to clean the track.

In the fourth and last qualifying session both crews were able to improve their times. Benjamin Leuenberger and Andrea Chiesa improved their time and will start this weekend from a 12th position. In the other car it was Peter Dumbreck that set a quickest lap of 4:03.641, which will put him and his team mates 9th on the GT2 grid.

Andrea Chiesa: “We concentrated on the race setup instead of a good qualifying result. Instead of being further up the grid we have saved some soft tires for the race that we can use at night. As a driver of course you always want to be quick but I think this will pay off in the race. I am happy with the setup of the car. Of course we could always have used another test day but I am looking forward to a reliable race without too much trouble”.
Peter van Erp, managing director Spyker Squadron: “We have been able to complete a lot of work in the last two days. We managed to work out a good setup and eventually we have set a very acceptable time. Although I think our time is really good, the competition is stronger than ever and it is unbelievable that the first teams dropped below the 4-minute mark. All drivers had plenty of track time to start the race with confidence. We managed to stay out of trouble and will start tonight to prepare the cars for the race.

Tomorrow is ‘preparation day’; the team already started to remove the engines. Fresh race engines will be installed in both cars and all sorts of other preparation have to be completed before Saturday, the race day. The 76th edition of the 24-hours of Le Mans starts at 15:00.

Regular updates will be published on Spyker Squadrons official website: Home Squadron | Spykercars and the race can be followed live via RTL7 (Netherlands), Eurosport (Europe and Asia), MotorsTV (Europe) and SpeedTV (USA) or Radio Le Mans (via Internet at www.radiolemans.com or at the track via FM 91.2).

                        Some pre race thoughts

The 4:03,641 of Peter Dumbreck in the #85 Spyker means an improvement over last year's 4:10,719 of 7,1 seconds. That's much faster! But Ferrari and Porsche improved as well. Both were faster than the magical GT2 4 minute mark. Porsche with 3:58,152 and Ferrari with 3:59,820 respectively 6,5 seconds and 4,3 seconds faster than last year. That means that Spyker was able to make the most progression compared to last year, and that's a great reward for putting such great effort in, in order to make all the changes this year. In spite of that they will have to start from 9th and 12th position out of 12 competitors. Last year they were 7th and 9th on the grid out of 14 competitors. That shows how fierce the competition will be this year, there are only very good teams taking the start this year!

The highest topspeed in class this year was 299 km/h set by a Ferrari, the lowest topspeed was 288 set by the #94 Speedy Spyker. Compared to last year, Spyker improved topspeed by 4 km/h. Unfortunately it is not enough though to keep up with the Ferrari's and Porsches in this area. If we look at the fastest sectortimes ( http://www.lemans.org/24heuresdumans...;202_24hbs.pdf )we can see that Spyker loses most time in the second sector. This is the sector with the Mulsanne straight in it.

If we look at the grid, the Spykers are not very well placed but there is hope of a better result during the race. In qualifying you only need one fast driver to get a good grid position, in the race you will need all the drivers. The #94 Spyker is last on the grid but did not use the fastest soft tyre in qualifying let alone qualifying tyres. So race pace is expected to be closer to times set in qualifying than teams who did use these tyres. Also very important: All three drivers posted similar times in the #94 car so that means it will consistently run that laptimes. It will gain on other entries if they have to use their second and third drivers.

Having seen the fastest laptimes of all the drivers ( http://www.lemans.org/24heuresdumans..._24hTpsPil.pdf ) I think, on race pace #85 and #94 will both be able to beat the #83 Risi Competizione Ferrari, the #99 JMB Ferrari and maybe the #90 Farnbacher Ferrari. To top that of Aucott crashed the JMB Ferrari, very early in the 3rd qualifying session, thereby limiting tracktime considerably. So that means on pace alone both Spykers should be able to reach the top 8 after all drivers had their share in the car.

In order to finish higher, Spyker needs other competitors to run into trouble and stay out of trouble theirselves!

If we take a look at last year's finishing rate of Ferrari, there is hope: Out of five Ferrari's only the two slowest finished the race. The finishers were the #83 Risi Competizione Ferrari (which had #99 last year) and the #99 JMB Ferrari (which had #78 last year). Porsche did much better though: Out of three Porsches two did survive, the fastest one winning the class!

I think it's wise that, in order to finish, the drivers of both Spykers will have to stick to the target laptime for the first half of the race and be very gentle with the cars in order to keep them running. After 12 hours, I would expect positions to be studied very carefully and see if one of more positions can be gained by increasing the pace. With six hours to go, I can imagine decisions will be made to settle the pace in order to bring the car home. If both Spykers are still in the race at this time it is possible to unleash one of them if it's in a position to fight for a podium position.

So if Spyker reaches the finishline, a top five finish is most likely, and with a bit of luck a podium is possible!
