          Snoras Spyker Squadron Qualifying report

Sat 13 Sep 2008 SNORAS SPYKER SQUADRON SILVERSTONE QUALIFYING

Silverstone, 13 September 2008 - The Spyker Laviolette’s will start from a 6th and 10th position in tomorrow’s ‘Autosport 1000 km of Silverstone’, the last round in this year’s Le Mans Series race season. The weekend started for the Dutch team with two free-practice sessions on Friday. Although the first free practice session was held in dry conditions, the two remaining sessions were completed on a damp track.

The performance and handling of the C8 Laviolette in the wet was great. In the early stages of the second free practice session Tom Coronel, driving the #85 SNORAS Spyker Squadron car, was one of the quickest drivers out on the track. At one point he was faster than many prototypes. Tom joined Squadron regulars Ralf Kelleners and Alexei Vasiliev as Peter Dumbreck races in the Japanese Super GT this weekend.

Although it stopped raining this morning the conditions did not improve a lot and the track was still wet. Most of the cars, including the Spyker’s, went out on wet tires to continue their quest for the best possible race setup. As the track became dryer teams switched to intermediates or slicks and times continued to improve right until the end of the last practice session. Peter van Erp, managing director Spyker Squadron: “In the rain we were one of the teams to beat. We could quickly find a setup that worked well for us. This morning we continued with this softer setup but towards the end of the session, when the track got dryer, this caused our cars to oversteer a bit”.

This afternoon, in the 20 minute GT qualifying session, Andrea Chiesa set the 10th quickest time in the #94 Speedy Racing Team car he shares with Benjamin Leuenberger. Andrea: “Predictions for tomorrow are dry so it is a bit frustrating that we did not have enough time to finalise the setup for the race tomorrow. To get out for qualifying with a car that is not perfectly setup and directly drive on the limit of your skills is tough. Maybe I could have found another second but I did not want to take too much risk”.

Ralf Kelleners qualified the #85 SNORAS Spyker Squadron car. He managed to set the 6th best time in class. “I am happy with today’s qualifying result but for now we have always had a good balance for the race” said Ralf after the race. “This time we had limited practice time due to yesterday’s rain and the setup for tomorrow’s race is not yet perfect. So we will make some changes overnight and I hope that we will have a bit more grip at the rear for the race tomorrow”.

The race will start at 11:20 tomorrow and will be covered live by radiolemans.com and Eurosport.

A 6th starting position is a very good start for the race! Let's hope they can overtake some of the Ferrari's and Porsches in front of them!

After only half an hour the #94 Spyker has had it's first pitstop. Unfortunately it was an unscheduled stop because there was some bodywork damage. It's not clear if it's had contact with another car or with a barrier. The car is being inspected fully to make sure it will be safe. When it made it's pitstop it was in 11th position, laptimes being way slower than the #85 sister car which is in 7th position right now. Let's hope the pitstop will not take too long and that the repairs that have been made will have quicker laptimes as a result!

Things are not looking good at all for the #94 Speedy Racing Team Spyker. Still in the pits, allready 4 laps lost. I hope it will be repaired and that it will be able to continue and at least finish the race...

After spending 14 minutes in the pits, the #94 Spyker just went out again. Good news! I will check the laptimes to see if all is working well again.

                    Race after 1 hour report

After one hour we just had the first pitstop of the #85 Spyker, ralf Kelleners brought it in while in 7th position. It's a fair position, Ralf was quicker than the cars behind him and just not able to get the pace of the number 4, 5 and 6, who are really close together. It was a quick stop from the excellent Squadron pitcrew, gaining about 10 seconds on a couple of other teams! Tom Coronel is only just in the car now, allready setting the fastest laptime of this Spyker, so that looks promising! Meanwhile the #94 is almost 8 laps behind but Andrea Chiesa has bettered the fastest laptime for this car and is now faster on the track than the three cars in front of him. Although it will not gain the 8 laps lost in the pitstop, it is still very important to make the best of it, setting fast laptimes and finish the race!

We now have a safetycar situation because there was a big shunt between the #7 peugeot and the #76 Porsche, which is now out of the race. Let's see if the #85 Spyker can now close the gap to the cars in front...

With the dust settling, this is the situation right now: Because the #85 was not lapped yet by the GT2 class leader, Tom Coronel was able to make the best out of the safety car situation, by closing the gap. Because the #76 is now out of the race, the #85 gained a position and is currently in 6th position in class.

Tom came into the pits for fuel only, in order to save a pitstop at the end of the race. Hope this strategy will work out!

There's more good news: Because of the pick up order of the safety car, all the cars in the GT2 class from 7th position and further back lost a lap! That means that the #85 car, which is in 6th position, was able to make that second pitstop for fuel only, without losing a single position! So now the #85 is still in 6th position but has fuelled up and could therefore have to make one pitstop less than all but one, the #98 Ferrari made a stop as well, of the other competitors.
This could turn out to be a decisive strategic move. Very well done by the Spyker Squadron!

                              Race after 2 hours report

The #91 Porsche had a colision with a prototype. Because of this the #85 Spyker has gained a position, now being 5th! The #94 Spyker worked it's way up to 10th position and is now on the same lap as the #93 car in 9th position!
